Featured Green Business: Solar Panel Jewelry

When Alicia Hunt became the new Director of Energy and Environment for the City of Medford, her husband, Jonathan Hunt, searched for jewelry to reflect her passion for sustainability…without any luck. So, he invented jewelry of his own.

“I was given broken solar cells and made something useful. It started as a gift of earrings, but when people saw them, they said, ‘You have to make those!’”

Jonathan’s work with solar panels expanded into cuff links and necklaces. He’s currently designing solar name tags. The items are all handcrafted and made from actual pieces of broken solar cells, and as Alicia learned from wearing the jewelry, “It starts conversations about renewable energy.”

The Hunts and their three children have been New England GreenStartmembers since 2006! Alicia and Jonathon also have a blog with updates on sustainability issues and green tips.
